EGX 2017 Report

  • Sin

The Hubris Team travelled up to Birmingham last weekend for our second team trip of the year! Read on for our report of the show and our fave bits!

EGX is an annual videogame expo and trade fair held in the Birmingham NEC.

A group of us travelled up for the Saturday to check out what was on offer. We were hoping to try out some new Switch titles, along with Monster Hunter: World and Battlefront 2.

We arrived just as the show opened, and got stuck in! Of particular note were the already huge queues for Destiny 2 and Battlefront 2. The atmosphere was good, with many awesome cosplayers already making the rounds and some tough decisions on what to prioritise!

Trying out the HTC Vive

The number of Mario and Luigi hats being worn round the hall showed the power of a good freebie as both Oddysey and the new Mario x Rabbids games were on show on the Nintendo stand. Also playable were the Switch updated version of Pokken Tournament and ARMS, along with the new Metroid and Monster Hunter Stories, all of which were great quality.

A small selection of wares

The Xbox Section held a variety of games including Middle-Earth: Shadow of War and Sea of Thieves- a multiplayer pirate game some of our team spent a long time queueing to try!

Watch out, tharr be pirates!

The PS4 section had several VR units available to try, and constantly popular bean bags to sit on, along with several games we enjoyed including Absolver and Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. Sin also tried the Lego Ninjago game but swiftlyleft after the unit he was playing on crashed.

Other highlights from the show included the retro section, allowing us a tense SNES Mario Kart battle, and a board game section where Feast of Odin was purchased.

Getting old school

The indies secion also held several treats including psychedelic platformer Octahedron, tactical top down shooter Fear Effect: Sedna, the manic Overcooked, and obligatory oddball dating sim Purrfect Date.

All in all we had a great day checking out the huge library of titles available to play! Particular standouts for the team were Monster Hunter: World, Dragon BallZ FighterZ, Splatoon 2, Dead Pixels II: Straight to Video, sitting on a huge dragon statue and of course Sin's best part of the day was meeting Mario.

Hope to see you at the Expo next year!
